The Siskiyou School
The Siskiyou School is looking for a class teacher to take next year's first grade class and join our faculty. We are a well-formed, dynamic first through eighth grade Waldorf school, with 20 full and part time teachers and a student body of 166. Ten off-site home-based Waldorf pre-schools and kindergartens feed into the school. The Siskiyou School is at the center of a large community of parents and teachers in the Rogue Valley, dedicated to Waldorf education.
Our two-acre campus includes four classroom buildings, a blacktop area and playing field, and adjoins a large public park that we use for Games classes and recesses. Our campus is a dream come true. When the old Waldorf school closed in 2000, a group of teachers and parents committed to finding a new site and starting anew. For seven years class teachers rented classroom spaces around town, operating as independent, self-sufficient pods, with no central campus. Festivals were the only occasions when all the children and families came together.
And then in the spring of 2006 the pieces began to fall into place. The 631 Clay Street church property came up for sale and the community rallied to move forward together. In just six weeks, they raised $700,000, testifying to their readiness to make a fresh start. 2006-2007 was a year of construction and renovation, culminating at our May 4th, 2007 school-warming celebration which marked the creation of a new home for Waldorf education in the Rogue Valley.
We are not done yet! The school is still in a time of building. We are planning two more full-size classrooms to accommodate eight full classes of 24-26 students. Two of our current classrooms can only comfortably hold 15-18 students. We know the demand is there for what we have to offer as a school and we don't want to have to turn students away.
Ashland is a beautiful place to live and raise children. Nestled between the Siskiyou and Cascade Ranges, this arts community is renown throughout the Pacific Northwest for its Shakespeare Festival and varied cultural offerings. Many Siskiyou School children take advantage of the musical, theatrical, artistic, and sports opportunities designed specifically for school age children in this town. As for weather, the sun almost always shines in the Valley; but 20 minutes up the road, Mt Ashland provides six months of skiing fun. Closest airport: Medford.
We offer a base salary of $34,500. We are looking for candidates with Waldorf teacher training certification, class teaching experience in a Waldorf school or with elementary age children, big heartedness, flexibility, and an open mind.
If it sounds like a fit, please send a resume, a letter of introduction/autobiography, and three references, Attn: Catherine Razi, Administrator. Call for more information: 482-8223. Deadline: April 1, 2008 Email: siskiyouschool@ashlandhome.net Website: www.siskiyouschool.org
