A Call to Teachers Interested in Pioneering a New High School

The Initiative: Merriconeag Waldorf High School, located on the beautiful Pineland campus in New Gloucester, Maine, will begin its second year of operation as Maine’s first Waldorf High School in September, 2008. We are looking for dynamic teachers with pioneering spirits to join a strong and committed faculty already planning to meet the needs of next year’s freshman, sophomore and junior classes. The Positions: The high school is seeking an experienced, full-time humanities teacher with a particular expertise in history, but with the flexibility to teach some English as well. Previous experience teaching adolescents in a Waldorf setting would be a real asset. Interest in community service, athletics and other student activities, flexibility, and a willingness to help shoulder the many responsibilities of a young high school are also be desirable qualities. Campus Settings: Founded in 1984, Merriconeag Waldorf School serves some 250 children in nursery/kindergarten through grade ten on two campuses. Situated on 80 acres, the school's Freeport campus includes four state-of-the-art buildings, including a straw-bale-constructed Early Childhood Center and a Community Hall for student performances and school-wide gatherings. Fifteen minutes west, the High School shares the Pineland campus with a number of businesses, a farm, and another small school. Students have access to nearby tennis courts, a YMCA with full basketball court, world-class cross country running and ski trails, and a dining hall. Community: Our strength, vision, and inspiration are derived from our anthroposophical foundation. Our community supports a study group, monthly meetings of the First Class of the School of Spiritual Science, and quarterly gatherings of The Christian Community. A foundation studies program of the Center for Anthroposophy has taken root here, as has an extension of Antioch University's Waldorf teacher training program. The school community has also attracted small-scale bio-dynamic farms and gardens. The school itself is a full member of the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America (AWSNA). The Area: New Gloucester is a short drive from Freeport, a picturesque town on the southern coast of Maine and home to L.L. Bean as well as dozens of other well-known outlets. It is also equidistant to both Brunswick, home of Bowdoin College, and Portland, Maine’s largest city and cultural center. Year-round recreational opportunities abound. Contact: Call David Sloan, Lead Teacher or Lucretia Pascarelli, High School Coordinator at 207-688-8989 or write Merriconeag Waldorf School ~ 83 Pineland Drive ~ New Gloucester, ME 04260, or email highschool@merriconeag.org

During the initial year prior to opening, the Coordinator will need to be self starter, goal and task oriented and capable of organizing the details associated with starting up a high school. Current Board members are all passionate parents with children in the Haleakala Waldorf School, and are dedicated to providing the High School experience that the Waldorf philosophy indicates. By employing a Waldorf trained Coordinator, Waldorf trained teacher and offering a Waldorf curriculum, the Aloha High School will be moving in the same direction as fully accredited Waldorf Schools. The ideal candidate will have extensive Waldorf High School experience in teaching and administration, a BA or higher, and will have completed Waldorf teacher training. Many parents of Haleakala Waldorf School are in support of this pioneering effort, while many outside the Waldorf community seek a viable option, especially in the upcountry area of Maui. Maui offers a rich and unique cultural environment, an incredible weather climate, combined with the abundant health-conscious community who seeks alternatives to the current high school choices - mainstream public schools or the highly academic college prep high school. Hawaii is experiencing a growth in attendance to private schools. All of this combined with a highly motivated Board of Directors, makes for an inviting and interesting opportunity for a highly skilled Coordinator and teachers. Life on Maui has so much to offer including a multitude of micro-climates, beautiful volcanic mountains with country side nature hikes, incredible oceans and beaches with surfing, kite-surfing, windsurfing, snorkeling, sailing and whale watching. The cultural attractions of Maui include the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, which features international films, touring plays, ballet, art exhibits and concerts of every genre and Maui’s own Maui Film Festival. The Haleakala Waldorf School, with its 22 years of love and caring of our growing children, brings spiritual depth to our community through festival celebrations and spirited teachers engaged in anthroposophy who look forward to this high school initiative. Biodynamic and organic farming initiatives are also active on our island. We are looking for individuals to join us who have training in Waldorf education, strong administrative and/or teaching abilities, collegial cooperation and teamwork, strong communication skills, a commitment to professional development, and a shared passion and drive to open our school successfully.
