Summer at the Garden City Waldorf School is a day camp for boys and girls age 3-11. For six weeks, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 in the morning to 3:00 in the afternoon, we have as much fun as we possibly can, learning from each other as we go. Ours is not the late summer of humid, iced-tea afternoons, with nature baking her harvest and the school year shimmering on the horizon.
We gather in early summer, when everything seems to be expanding in the bright air and childhood energies spread like brush fires. The setting is our school's year-round campus, with room to run and climb, access to tennis courts and swimming, and a program of art, crafts, music and lessons- all tailored to the interests and abilities of each age group. The different groups (except for the nursery campers) have ample opportunity to mingle and share in non-academic, non-competitive activities. There are always a few extras and surprises: a trip to the theatre (for the older children), a visit from our local firemen (just visiting), a concert, a play. Our counselors are Waldorf teachers, alumni and high school students, chosen for their love of summer, learning and children.
As our Camp Director, Gordon Purdie, says with relish, "It's summer and time to have some fun!" We do just that...
